April Fishing Thread | The Key Play

I know we're about halfway through April but we're out of winter and its about that time to start up the monthly threads. Wedding planning has taken a good portion of my time and I haven't been out much at all. I think my main goal is to go on a few sleigh rides in the 12' boat this spring.

In other trip news my father's idea of a bachelor party was pretty on point. Meeting with some other family and going on a full day trip with "Fish Witch" out of Carolina Beach https://fishwitch.com/

So I am heading down to Destin, FL for a July Summer vacation with the family and we are planning on getting a fishing charter the week of the 4th. Has anybody gone on any charters down there and know of some good ones? Just looking for some suggestions.

I don't know any charters, but Navarre Pier is really nice.

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

Trout season just started up in here NJ and we are waiting for the floodwaters to die down from some recent rain. Anybody have solid trout lures they can recommend?

Where specifically are you fishing? Runoff is a great time to fish for trout because they will be less picky

flooded rivers. There is a river merge at my house with a bridge, so I have it all. Flat wide and deep, quick rocky and shallow, cover under a bridge. Hope thats what you mean.

Can never go wrong with a squirmy worm (fly fishing) in that situation.

So true! And in almost any situation.

Finally got around to looking at my Talon that I broke last year. Its not fixable at least by me or the Minn Kota shop so its in the garbage probably not going to replace it but look at a new trolling motor instead. Prices are absurd. I can literally build another boat with a motor for what a new trolling motor costs. $2500 for a 36v 72" iPilot

Friend of mine got his new boat finally but needs a trolling motor and now wishes he had bought a boat that came with one so he doesnt have to try to get a good one now. Its amazing how much theyve gone up in 3 years.

Absolute beginner here. I did some fishing with my family when I was young and want to carry on with my kids who are 4-6. I'm looking for advise on lures/ bait. What little I did when I was a kid was live bait. Trying to keep it simple for the kids. Obviously would help keep their attention if we caught something. I have a few lakes and freshwater rivers near me I'm targeting. Not even sure what kind of fish I'm most likely to encounter / target. Any suggestions on lures to use ( or any other advise, lol).

What state are you in I'm guessing SC? Cant ever go wrong with worms or crickets under a bobber for kids typically can get you enough fish like bluegill to keep the kids entertained and snag the occasional bass to make things even better.

Fished in the Keys for 6 of 8 days on my recent trip down there. My friend and former boss from Aspen joined me and we camped at Big Pine Lodge and the Sugarloaf KOA the whole time. We spent a majority of the time on the water around Big Pine Key. Slowly but surely, I am learning how to fish the flats down there. It is daunting and I've got a mental block that it's this impossible place, but I'm regularly finding fish and most of the time my presumptions are correct. For the second year in a row I stuck a bonefish on fly and we had shots at some very big permit. We played with monster Cuda on the flats as well and lots of baby 20-40 pound tarpon at the bridges in the evening. The bridge tarpon are a very fun bite and not very difficult. Between us on two evenings we had over 30 eats, a dozen fish jumped and six landed.. Could have been more but we kept getting hungry and thirsty and running the boat over to No Name Pub. To fish the bridges, anchor above the bridge on an outgoing tide and swing flies across the current like a trout stream. Get the fly right to the base of the bridge pilings. The poons are stacked up and will slam the fly right off of the surface. We did not try Bahia Honda bridge but that is supposedly where the 100-130 pounders are caught at night. I cannot imagine. Chasing the 40 pounders under the bridge was harrowing enough trying not to damage my boat.

We had one full day bar crawl in Key West. 15 bars in 14 hours. I remember most of it. The next day I was fairly useless, but it was a blow day anyways. The final day we fished in the Everglades out of Flamingo. Excellent weather but only one small Cuda came to hand. No clue as to why it was so slow. Jarrod told me he didn't want to leave the sunny weather and landed in Colorado with 17 inches of new snow falling. Quite the shock, though to go tarpon fishing one day and world class skiing the next would be pretty awesome. It was a long drive back to Virginia for me, but I turned around 3 days later and went to the Spring Game. My liver needs a break.

Already dying to get back down there again and learn more in the most difficult fishery in the world.

Those are some pretty fish! We are working on a trip with friends to the keys for last week of August. Looking to get out for a few days for some fun (wives coming, but shopping when we fish). Any recommendations on a charter for 3-4?

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

People are catching damn near anything they want here right now. Snook on the beaches, reds and trout in the grass, tarpon anywhere, etc. I'm just hoping to get the green light from my shoulder doctor on Monday. As of today, it has officially been 5 months since I got any lines wet. I'm scared that my fly lines will need to be replaced.... I don't even want to know what those would cost right now...

I thought of you driving past. One of these years I will come visit. Why would the lines need replacing? Let me know what sizes you need. I have stacks of them and can depending on what you need, can potentially cut a deal a little cheaper than what you pay MSRP.

I've let them sit during my recovery and haven't been paying attention to them at all. I honestly don't even know if I conditioned them before I hung them up. I stupidly put them on the racks in the garage instead of bring them upstairs and hang them up.

Idk for sure if I do need to replace them. I'll find out soon though

Unless they sat in the sun for 8 straight months, they will be fine. I do absolutely nothing to my lines when I pull them off the reels and they are all fine except for the abuse they take on the boat.

Well that's promising. I hope to be able to try them next weekend, but God only knows what the doc says on Monday...

Edit: Doctors SUCK. Well, actually, getting older sucks, but I'm blaming the Doc😂. 4 more weeks of "no heavy lifting or other exercise like activities, with the exception of twice per week PT sessions"... it's almost like this dude just REALLY likes my insurance coverage.... Apparently my range of motion is great, but the stability in my rotator cuff isn't up to par yet... ugh.

Planning to be in Mathews/Gwynn's Island area this weekend (4/23). Looking to get a line wet. Nothing out in the bay, only have a Jon Boat or Kayak. Appreciate any advice on spots or baits?

Tough time of year. Better once summer patterns set in and fish are migrating up the bay. Jigging some plastics around points/structure could get you some stripers potentially.

Can't spell DBU without Bud

Agreed, hard time of the year. Could try the dock lights under the bridge to Gwynns. I've been told they hold stripers all year long

I'm about 5 minutes from listing my boat for sale. Can't deal with this thing anymore. Went out Sunday for what was supposed to be an all day fishing trip. Trolling motor immediately didn't do anything. Sat at anchor and went through all the basics nothing worked. While sitting there a bit pissed off a threw a cast an immediately got hit by an 18" trout. Without my trolling motor and no power pole fishing is pretty much impossible inshore here minus a few shorelines I can drift on the perfect tide/wind. Decided to call it quits fishing and take my fiancee to her hobby and stopped off an hunted for some teeth, had a decent haul. To top my day off I smoked a shoal that has formed directly in the center of a narrowly marked channel. trout and teeth:

I've traced power on the trolling motor. I have 36v to the plug, 36v to the head, 36v to the foot. Magnet and aremture appear fine so I'm at a complete loss. I already wanted a new trolling motor but don't have $2,500 in the budget to swing right now, pocketing the $20k or so I can get out of the boat is starting to sound like an ideal situation gonna have some civiche and think this over.

You sound like me... except only shark's tooth I've ever found was in a parking lot.

Well, been in Wilmington NC since October and haven't fished a lick. Hoping to get out at some point in May. I'm hearing reports of guys already catching spanish off the piers in the area (I thought it was early for that, but what do I know). Trout are hot atm as well from what I hear.

Anyone fish this area at all?

Lots of flats on the inside of the barrier islands off the ICW. Gotta be reds in there. I have casually fished around there but couldn't give you any specifics. Burn spoons around points and oyster bars. 1/2 ounce Johnson silver minnows. Spanish have showed up off the wrecks at Cape Lookout so no surprise that they are being caught in Wilmington.
